Zbigniew Treppa

professor

Graduate of the Faculty of Theology at the Catholic University of Lublin, he obtained his PhD degree at the Academy of Fine Arts in Poznań. He wrote his post doctoral dissertation at the State Higher School of Film, Television, and Theatre in Łódź. Professor at the University of Gdańsk, the Head of the Visual Anthropology Unit and a Lecturer at the Academy of Fine Arts in Gdańsk. Member of Sindonological Section of Polish Theological Society and member of the team of experts at National Center of Culture.

In his research work he deals with issues such as image analysis, image symbolization and the photographic image substantiality. He also deals with the study of acheiropoietos image structural properties. He published a series of books and articles on these topics. Among the most important are: The Shroud of Turin – the photograph of the Invisible One? 2004, 2010 (second edition) Więź-Word/Image; Mexican symphony – the Icon from Guadalupe, Więź 2006; 2012/2013, Thinking with image in photography, CZYSTYWARSZTAT; The Manoppello Icon the prototype of images of Christ, Wydawnictwo Uniwersytetu Gdańskiego 2014 (co-author); The Mystery of the Visibility of God, Wydawnictwo WAM 2015; Image as a medium initiating into the mystery, Wydawnictwo Uniwersytetu Gdańskiego 2017.

Since 1982 he has been the author of over a dozen individual exhibitions in the field of staged photography, i.a.: Predicting, Warszawa, Mała Galeria ZPAF-CSW 1993; Opera Infinita – Opera Aperta, Łódź, Galeria FF 1997; Camera Lucida, Gdańsk, Łaźnia 2004; Signs of Light, Gdańsk-Oliwa, National Museum in Gdańsk 2005; Corporale, Konin, Galeria CKiS Wieża Ciśnień 2012; The Gate, Istambul, FASS Art Gallery 2015. He is also a laureate of design photography competitions.

Karolina Aszyk-Treppa

Philosophiae doctor

Graduate of the Faculty of Painting and Graphics at the Academy of Fine Arts in Gdańsk – diploma with honours – 1998, she obtained her PhD degree at the Academy of Fine Arts in Kraków – 2005. She received the scholarship of the President of the City of Gdańsk and the Ministry of Culture and Art. Since 2009 she has been an assistant professor at the Institute of Media Systems and Mass Communication at the University of Gdańsk, leading photography classes and lecturing on the theory and history of photography. In her research work she deals with the subject of image analysis. She participates in national and international collective exhibitions and is a laureate of national and international competitions, i.a.:”4th Biennale of Fine Art & Documentary Photography” (Berlin Foto Biennale 2016); ”Same but Different”, New York; ”Tokyo International Foto Awards 2016”; ”Prix de la Photographie Paris 2016”; ”The 7th Edition of The Julia Margaret Cameron Award for Women Photographers”.

From 1996 onwards Karolina Aszyk has held twelve solo exhibitions in the field of painting and photography. One of the first was the painting exhibition Transfiguration in National Museum (Pałac Opatów) in Gdańsk, one of the latest: the exhibition of photographs Between in FassArt Gallery in Istambul in October 2015; – Collections, Wrocław in March 2017. Co-author of the research program on structural quality of Manoppello Veil and co-author of the book The Manoppello Icon the prototype of images of Christ, published by the University of Gdańsk in 2014;

Film editor. Graduate of the Film and Television Direction Department at the National Film School in Łódź, in the particular fields of video and sound editing. Member of the Polish Editors Association and graduate of the Biology, Oceanography and Geography faculty at the University of Gdańsk. Working as an editor since 1998, she has a comprehensive professional experience and cooperates with many prominent directors, screenwriters and camera operators. In 2011 she made her debut with the feature film The Closed Circuit, directed by Ryszard Bugajski. She is an editor of feature films, documentaries, reports, programmes, shows, TV performances, advertisements and music videos. The films she helped to create were repeatedly awarded and presented at Polish and international film festivals. She is also the codirector and editor of the documentary MISS HOLOCAUST, which was nominated for the Golden Bear at the Berlin International Film Festival in 2017.

Film production

Jakub Maj

Jakub Maj, a film producer. Graduate from theFilm Art Organization Department Faculty at Lodz Film School and, earlier, Management and Economics Faculty at Gdańsk University of Technology. He has run his production house under the name Maj Film since 2010. Besides commercial projects like ads, promotional or branding videos, he produces artistic films, both feature and documentary.

Among his most successful projects, one can find the below productions: “Wardrobe” (working title) – short-length feature film directed by Paweł Podolski, co-produced by Munk Studio – in postproduction, „Face-Off”– short-length documentary directed by Łukasz Ostalski, co-produced by Gdynia Film Fund and WF Kalina – 2017, „Cheerleaders”– medium-length documentary directed by Sławomir Witek, co-produced by: MX35 and co-financed by: PFI and Sopot City Hall – 2015, „Unstoppables”– (as script writer and project coordinator) feature-length documentary directed by Bartosz M. Kowalski, produced by HBO Europe and Film It, co-financed by PFI and Gdynia Film Fund – 2015, „KARMA”short feature film directed by Jakub Maj, co-produced with Auris Media Group and Bolesław Janas – 2013 (its first public screening took place at the Short Film Corner of the Cannes Festival 2013).

Maj Film has been a member of the Polish Audiovisual Chamber of Commerce (KIPA) and its Emerging Producers Section since the beginning of 2012.

Mikołaj Trzaska

Born in Gdańsk (Poland); saxophonist, bass clarinetist and composer. Grew out of yass – a socio-artistic movement that in the 80s/90s opposed the rigidity of Polish jazz environment. Together with Tymon Tymański and a group of other musicians free from any doctrine they changed the image of Polish jazz music.

Trzaska was the co-founder of the most important yass group – The legendary Miłość. Despite the impetus of yass fading away many years ago, he later became the leader of the national improvisation scene with his own group – Łoskot.

After the yass period he recorded a few concentrated and quiet albums with the section of Oleś brothers. He also accompanied poets – Świetlicki and Andrukhovych; he created musical-literary projects with Andrzej Stasiuk. Today he is the leader of international trio Volumen and Ircha Clarinet Quartet, a member of Resonance of Ken Vandermark, Magic – Joe McPhee or Shofar trio with Raphael Rogiński and Macio Moretti – playing Jewish music, but above all he realizes himself in the radical contemporary free jazz. He travels around the world, cooperating with personalities of the international improvisation scene like: Peter Brötzmann, Joe McPhee, Ken Vandermak, Peter Friis Nielsen, Clementine Gasser, Pete Ole Jorgensen, Michael Zerang, Franz Houtzinger, Jay Rosen, Domik Duval, or Mark Sanders. He has recorded around thirty albums. Mikołaj Trzaska composed music to over 20 films, some of which were directed by Wojciech Smarzowski, such as Dom Zły, Róża, Pod Mocnym Aniołem, Drogówka (awarded at 39. Polish Feature Film Festival in Gdynia), or Wołyń (Eagle Award, 2017).

Katarzyna Łukasik

Philosophiae doctor

Graduate of The Strzemiński Academy of Art in Łodź (Faculty of Visual Arts and Faculty of Graphics and Painting). She completed her diploma at Professor’s Grzegorz Przyborek’s applied photography studio and Professor Andrzej Smoczyński’s screen printing studio. PhD in Plastic Arts at the Academy of Fine Arts in Krakow (Faculty of Graphic Arts).

Lecturer in photography and art education. Since 2012 Katarzyna Łukasik has been teaching at the Academy of Fine Arts in Gdańsk, currently as a lecturer and tutor at the screen printing studio. Katarzyna Łukasik combines her research with artistic creativity. She has had numerous solo exhibitions (in Poland and abroad), took part in collective exhibitions and received awards in prestigious competitions. Katrzyna Łukasik also worked as a scenographer, second scenographer and assistant scenographer. For her work in scenography (i.a. tv series Paradoks, features: Cudowne lato, dir. R. Brylski, Jestem twój, dir. M. Grzegorzek, Koleżanki, dir. S. Jakimow), Łukasik has received numerous awards, i.a. at the “Młodzi i Film” Festival and the Polish Film Festival in Gdynia.

Elżbieta Benkowska

Elżbieta Benkowska – born in the year of the dragon, daughter of a shipyard worker and an accountant, sister of a mathematician, granddaughter of three Kashubians and a citizen of the Free City of Danzig, who decided to become a film director. She is a graduate of Slavic Studies at University of Gdańsk, Gdynia Film School and Wajda School. For her short diploma film Olena she received a number of awards, including a Palme d’Or nomination in the short film category at the 66th Cannes Film Festival. She went on to direct the first part of the film triptych The New World produced by Akson Studio. Assistant director in Ptaki śpiewają w Kigali (dir. J. Kos-Krauze) and in Powidoki, dir. Andrzej Wajda.She is now working on the script for her feature-length debut and writing a doctoral dissertation at the University of Gdańsk about Polish and Serbian football fans.

Roman Przylipiak

Born in Gdańsk in 1973. He graduated from the National Film School in Łódź and from the Wajda Film School Master Class.He studied photography at the Academy of Fine Arts in Gdańsk and graphic design at the Academy of Fine Arts in Warsaw. He was a mentor and art supervisor on workshops “Tender Metropolis” for young filmmakers. in two editions: Warsaw-Berlin and Warsaw-Budapest. Apart from feature and experimental films, his portfolio includes several dozen music videos awarded with multiple prizes and awards. On recently Yach Film festival he won the Best Director Award. He won second prize in the ‘Crossing Boundaries’ International Competition (Goethe Institute) for his short film ‘Kurs’/’Drive’. He creates visualizations for theater plays – for Powszechny and Studio theatres in Warsaw and for the Academy for Dramatic Arts in Cracow. His portfolio also includes several experimental projects on the boundary of photography and film such as: ‘Relationship Train’ exhibited at the National Museum in Warsaw in 2005 or “No Selfie” – video art instalation, exhibited at Gallery “Wystawa” in Warsaw 2018. In 2017 he finished his 30-minutes feature: ‘Jerry’ with Paweł Pawlikowski as the artistic supervisor. ‘Jerry’ won Best Film Award on Kamera Akcja Festival in Łódź in 2017, Best Screenplay on WAMA Film Festival 2017. Film was in ofiicial selections on (among others): Polish Film Festival Gdynia 2017, Clermont-Ferrand Short Film Festival France 2018, Hong-Kong Fresh Wave Festival 2018, Warsaw Film Festival in selection: Best Polish Short Films 2017. Marcin Borchardt

Screenwriter, director and film critic. Author of The Avant-Garde Music at the End of the 20th Century. The Beginners’ Guide (Gdańsk, 2014). Documentary, commercial, video clip and television programme filmmaker. Director of highly praised feature-length documentary Beksińscy. Album wideofoniczny, awarded at many film festivals, among others the Special Mention and a recommendation to the European Film Award at Kraków Film Festival in 2017. He teaches short fiction film aesthetics at the Film School in Gdynia, avant-garde and experimental cinema, as well as contemporary documentary filmmaking at the University of Gdańsk.

Documentary film workshops

Maciej Cuske

Polish documentary film director, screenwriter and documentary cameraman. He has been creating independent amateur films ever since high school. His first released production was I co wy na to, Gałuszko? (2001), made in cooperation with Marcin Sauter, who runs the Bydgoszcz Film Newsreel together with Maciej since 2007. In 2004 he graduated from a documentary course at the Wajda School in Warsaw. Since 2006 he has been organising film workshops for youths and adults all over Poland. He is an expert at the Polish Art Institute and since 2012, a member of the Polish Film Academy. Additionally, he is a lecturer at the Wajda School since 2013 — the same year in which he made his first feature debut Stacja Warszawa, created together with four other directors. The film managed to win 4 awards at the “Młodzi i Film” Festival. His most successful documentaries include i.a: Kuracja (2004), Antykwariat (2005), Na niebie, na ziemi (2007), III. Pamiętaj, abyś dzień święty święcił (2008).

Filip Jacobson

Documentary film director. Graduate of Film Studies at the Łódź University in Poland, the Gdynia Film School in Poland, and the Academy of Media Arts in Cologne, Germany. As an exchange student at EICTV in Cuba, he participated in various workshops, such as the EsoDoc Workshops, GoShort Talent Campus, Polska Doc, and the Berlinale Talent Campus. He organises film workshops for children and youth in Turkey, Romania and Poland. Since 2016 he is a teacher at the University of Gdańsk. Author of articles, and two photo exhibitions. His films were awarded at the most important European international film festivals, such as the Doc Leipzig, or the Krakow Film Festival. Author of 5 short documentaries; currently, he is working on a feature debut in Cuba.
